The Gelid Islands were not what Evan expected. He was given a full bag of provisions, and Poldris cast a spell that would keep him warm.
âWe donât want you to freeze to death,â she explained. âThe test is not one of endurance. The elements are not what you need to overcome.â
Evan wasnât reassured, but he was glad that the spell kept him warm despite the wind that howled through the land. The Gelid Islands was a frozen land. That was all Evan got right. It was a large plain, with buffeting winds, and a darkness that was lit only by a pale silver moon. The other two moons seemed not to appear here. The silver moon glinted off the ice, that the whole landscape appeared to be glowing faintly. There was no break in the plain white that Evan could see. No hills, no trees, no bushes or scrubs. Nothing.
His provisions included a tent and fresh water as well as food. Evan didnât know what he was supposed to do, so he decided to pitch a tent. Which should have been extremely difficult since the ground was frozen solid and the wind was strong, but the spikes went in the ground as soon as they touched it, and the tent all but constructed itself, making Evan realise that it was enchanted as well.
There was firewood among the provisions, and Evan dug a firepit, once again, quite easily. He heated the water and made tea. Sitting there, drinking tea, Evan wondered what he was doing. It made no sense, this whole test. Was he supposed to do nothing? He might as well have stayed home.
Resentment bubbled inside him. Fuck the dragons and their stupid test! He didnât need them, anyway. Why would he study about them? There were several other things he could study. What did the dragons think of themselves, anyway?
He was about to get up and use the emergency token that Poldris had given him before they had started. It would enable him to alert Poldris that he didnât want to complete the test. As he stretched out his hand, it seemed like the shadow of a dragon fell on it, and Evan curled his fingers, confused. What was happening to him? What was he doing? This had been his wish, his goal, since he was a boy. How could he just walk away from it? The dragons hadnât treated him with any kind of arrogance. So what if Byre wasnât the most friendly? They didnât know each other well after all. Byre must have seen his share of humans, and Evan knew that his species could be petty and selfish. Dragons lived such long lives that all the vicissitudes of humans might seem insignificant to them. Evan had to do what he could to change Byreâs mind. Wasnât that also his goal? One which he held close to his chest, which only Ferrel knew about. The wish that he could bring humans and dragons closer, to make them understand one another better.
